Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare to install sprung timber flooring
  • Interpret sprung timber flooring installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
  • Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
  • Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • Gather the flooring material and confirm its species, grade, size, quantity and quality against job instructions
  • Check and confirm the flooring material’s moisture content is suitable for site conditions according to workplace procedures
  • Gather the underlay, adhesives, trims and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
  • Confirm the subfloor is clean and suitable for installing the flooring, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • Remove or undercut door jambs, cover trims and other joinery, and store for refitting or send for machining according to job instructions
       
Element: Cut, fit and fasten sprung timber flooring
  • Install underfloor pads according to manufacturer instructions
  • Install batten and/or sheet substrate materials according to job and manufacturer instructions
  • Establish the starting point and mark out working lines
  • Lay out the flooring according to job instructions to maximise aesthetics with respect to material colours, grains and patterns, to minimise waste and joins, and to ensure an efficient, quality installation
  • Measure, mark and cut the flooring to length and size
  • Install the flooring according to the manufacturer instructions, allowing appropriate field and perimeter expansion joints
  • Refit removed items and finish installing the flooring
  • Check the flooring is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
  • Make any necessary preparations for sanding the flooring, according to job instructions
       
Element: Complete the task according to workplace procedures
  • Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
  • Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
  • Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
  • Complete task outcome documentation

Assessment Tasks
